The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), headed by President Chandrika Kumaratunga, announced Friday that all the party Parliamentarians of SLFP canceled their foreign Tours with immediate effect, the Daily News reported Saturday.

The SLFP General Secretary and Minister of Mahaweli, Irrigation,River Basins and Rajarata Development Maithripala Sirisena said that foreign tours of all the party Parliamentarians including Ministers must be canceled with immediate effect, a media release from the SLFP Presidential Election Campaign said.

None of the Party Parliamentarians including Ministers can leave the country without the Party General Secretary's permission until further notice, the release said.

Sri Lanka's Supreme Court announced here on Aug. 26 that the country's next presidential election must be held within 2005, clearing up the long debate over the date for the next presidential election. Enditem

Sri Lanka stocks reach a new high on foreign activity

Sept 16, Colombo: Sri Lanka stocks ended the week with a new high today at the Colombo Bourse in heavy trading as foreign investors anticipating upbeat returns bought shares in Dialog Telecom, the largest mobile phone operator in Sri Lanka. The Colombo bourse has gained over 48% this year becoming the best performing market in Asia.

The key Colombo All Share Price Index rose 6.98 points or 0.31% to close at 2,244.50 while the Milanka Price Index which tracks highly capitalized and more liquid stocks gained 4.74 points or 0.16% to close at 2,967.89. The turnover closed at 626.3 million rupees with foreign purchases of 222.4 million rupees and foreign sales of 58.2 million rupees. The trading volume closed slightly over 20 million shares.

Dialog telecom led the turnover with 5.07 million shares rising 1.43% to 17.75 rupees while Tess Agro followed by trading 3.35 million shares up by 16.67%. Cargo Boat fell 16.02% to 76.00 rupees trading nearly 1.6 million shares. Asiri Medical remained flat trading 1.22 million shares. Conglomerate John Keells holdings boosting the blue chips activity rose 1.91% to 160.00 rupees trading 829,400 shares while Lanka IOC fell again today 1.18% to 42.00 rupees trading 966,400 shares. Other major contributors to the turnover included Telecom (422,900), Ceylon Glass (415,800), Nations Trust (331,400), Mullers (329,100), Reefcomber (324,100) Equity One (301,600) and Royal Ceramics (226,500).

Trading sector gained 48.4 points or 2.46% while Services index was up by 2.36%. Oil Palms sector posted a loss of 4.27% due to the falling share prices of Bukit Darah while Construction and Engineering index was down by 2.35%. Investment Trusts and Motors sectors also posted significant losses.

Tess Agro gained 16.67% to place at the top of the gainers’ list today. Other top gainers included Equity One (15.73%), Hapugastenne Plantations (11.48%), Ceylon & Foreign Trades (11.11%) and Keells Foods (8.76%).

Cargo Boat posted a loss of 16.02% placing it at the top of the loser’s list. The other top losers included Vanik – non voting (-11.11%), Vanik (-9.09%), Mercantile Leasing (-8.33%), and Metal Packaging (-8.12%).
